Community filmmaking workshops with diverse young people who tell their story in an uplifting musical journey
Maitree House producers Leigh Bramall and Peta Khan worked with artists Alyson Evans and Liam Monkhouse as a part of a six-month filmmaking and drama program for young people living in Darwin’s multicultural northern suburbs run by Darwin Community Arts and Multicultural Youth NT.
The young people decided on what story they wanted to tell, then underwent weekly workshops learning the craft of storytelling for screen, music for screen, film production and post production skills.
The result of the worksop program was an inspiring musical documentary celebrating the courage and resilience of young people and families from diverse cultural backgrounds now living in Australia.
Outcomes

Jane Alia, one of the workshop participants said “People face huge challenges when setting up life in a new country. Along with the trials people face, the film Our Journey also celebrates resilience and diversity in Darwin, because Australia offers so many opportunities to contribute to a thriving multicultural community.”
The program was supported by Scanlon Foundation and the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
